Container repair, Importance:

To restore structural integrity of a shipping freight container "Repair Procedure" is very important. This article provides you a basic assistance for the repair to permit their safe return to service.

Container repairers are reminded that they are responsible for complying safety and other procedures described by their applicable government or owner. 


The Common Procedures:

1) Selected repair Method should be most economical.

2) Priority should be straightened or welded rather than removed, inserts, sections or replacement of components.

3) Repair should restore the damage profile as close as possible to undamaged profile.

4) After repair container must meet all requirements of ISO standards.

5) Sometimes lightly damaged components need repair if they are near about a repairworthy damage. (see:Container Inspection 02 (Types of Defects))

 

Repair Terms:

Straighten:

Restore a damaged component mechanically or hydraulically to the original shape without removal any portion or component.

 

Weld: 

To fuse two separate pieces of metal parts using heat with a third piece of metal.

 

Insert:

To restore a damaged component by cutting out a portion that is less than the full-profile section and welding or fastening replacement material of the original size. The replaced part itself is called an insert.

 

Patch:

The same as inserting, except that the replacement material is slightly larger than the cut or removed material. Patching is not permitted for all components. Only allowed for panels unless otherwise stated in owners’ regulations.

 

Section:

To restore a damaged component to its original size, shape and strength by cutting out a portion of the component that extends through its full profile and welding or fastening replacement material of the original size, shape and strength in place.

  

Replace:

To remove an entire damaged component and attach a completely new component of the original size and strength.

 

Safety Precautions:

Repair personnel should observe appropriate safety when repairing containers. Repairman needs safety clothing, hard hats, safety goggles, gloves, hearing protection, masks and any other devices.

 

General Principles:

In order to satisfactory repair the following general principles should be observed:

1) If the damage esquires repair, determine the most economical type of repair that will correct the defect satisfactorily.

2) Select the appropriate tools and arrange supports and other fixtures as necessary.

3) Temporarily remove or shield any nearby undamaged components that could become damaged in the repair process, particularly wooden floor.

4) Confirm that, once paint, the finished repair will be of satisfactory cosmetic appearance.

5) Put back any temporarily removed components into place and remove any shielding or other fixtures.

 

Quality of Replacement:

When replace a component remember that the strength of the repaired area should be greater than or equal to the original. Materials and parts should be equal or higher quality, strength and thickness than the original.  If the original type of steel unknown, use Corten steel to repair panels. Welding material must be at least as strong the parent materials being welded.

  

Surface Preparation:

Whenever steel inserts, section or replacement components are installed on a container, the steel must be properly cleaned before any primer is applied.

 

Tools:

 Mechanical tools such as hammers, chisels and hydraulic jacks, cutting tools- such as oxygen-acetylene torches, plasma cutters, disc cutters, wood saws, grinding tools, painting equipment, cleaning Equipment must at hand to perform the required job.
